* Wirwa
To Climb, To Rise
Part of speech:
(Vintr)
Sources:
Stone [weerwa]
Notes:
This word was recorded a number of times from modern speakers of Werkaya but not from Wembawemba people: they only used 'perrəpa' - 'to climb' and 'pirna' - 'to get up'. It seems possible that Stone heard this word and its derivatives from Archie Pepper and other Werkaya people staying at Lake Boga: '*wirrwalang nyawi' - 'sun rising', 'east', Stone [worwalling gnawi]
Usage:
Pronunciation Guide:
Say: woor-wah
Pronunciation Notes:
Vowels: Standard - 'a' as in 'path' or 'car' (2nd 'a'),
Variation - when ‘i’ follows a ‘w’  and is followed by a ‘r’, ‘rn’ or ‘rt’ but not ‘rr’, the ‘i’ is rounded off like ‘tu’ in French. (top of the tongue touches the back of the palate) (different to the English 'ooh').
